Everything First-Time Renters Need to Know About Renting a Car in BC

Renting a car for the first time sounds straightforward until you’re standing at the counter, someone’s rattling off insurance options you’ve never heard of, and you’re not sure if you already have coverage through your credit card or not. It’s a lot to process in the moment — especially after a long flight into YVR.

This guide cuts through all of that. Here’s everything a first-time renter needs to know before picking up a car in British Columbia.

The Documents You Need at Pickup

Getting this wrong can mean no car, so sort it out before you show up.

Your driver’s licence is obviously the starting point — but it needs to be a full licence, not a learner’s or novice permit. Both of those are disqualifying in BC, regardless of how long you’ve held them or what province or country issued them.

A major credit card in your name is required for the security deposit. Debit cards and prepaid cards are generally not accepted for this. The card needs to be in the renter’s name — not a partner’s, not a parent’s.

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is needed if your licence is not in English or French. This is easy to overlook, especially if you’re visiting from parts of Asia, South America, or the Middle East. The IDP doesn’t replace your home licence — you need both. Get the IDP sorted before you leave home, as they’re issued in your country of origin, not at your destination.

Age Requirements and Young Driver Fees

Most car rental companies in BC set the minimum rental age at 21. If you’re under 25, expect an additional daily fee — this is standard across the industry and covers the higher statistical risk associated with younger drivers. It’s not negotiable, but it’s also not huge.

Some companies will rent to drivers as young as 19, though with more restrictions attached — typically limited to smaller vehicle categories. If you’re 19 or 20 and need a car, call ahead and ask specifically, rather than assuming availability online.

Luxury, exotic, and larger premium vehicles typically have a stricter cutoff — usually 25 — regardless of where you rent from.

Understanding Your Insurance Options

This is the part that trips up most first-time renters, and it doesn’t have to.

When you rent a car in BC, the vehicle comes with basic third-party liability coverage built in — that’s the minimum required by law and it’s included in your rental rate. What it doesn’t automatically include is coverage for damage to the rental vehicle itself.

For that, you have a few paths:

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) through the rental company reduces or eliminates your financial responsibility if the car is damaged during your rental. It’s not technically insurance — it’s the company agreeing not to charge you — but it functions the same way.

Your own auto insurance may extend to rental vehicles if you have a personal policy in Canada. Check with your insurer before you rent, not after.

Credit card coverage is offered by many Visa and Mastercard products, but the terms vary widely. Some cards cover rentals automatically; others require you to decline the rental company’s CDW and pay the full rental on that card. Read your card’s benefits guide or call your card issuer before relying on this.

The short version: know what you’re covered for before you get to the counter, so you’re not making that decision under pressure.

Winter Tires and BC Road Rules

BC has mandatory winter tire requirements on many provincial highways from October 1 through April 30. This includes major routes like the Coquihalla Highway, Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon, and the Sea-to-Sky Highway to Whistler. Vehicles without appropriate tires can be turned back at check stops — this is enforced.

If you’re renting during the winter months and plan to drive any mountain routes, ask the rental company upfront whether the vehicle is already fitted with winter tires. A reputable company should be able to answer this clearly and confirm it in writing.

A few other BC-specific things worth knowing: handheld mobile device use while driving carries heavy fines. Seatbelts are mandatory for all occupants. Speed limits are posted in kilometres per hour — if you’re used to miles, 100 km/h is roughly 62 mph, which is the standard highway limit across most of BC.

Inspecting the Car Before You Drive Away

This step takes five minutes and can save you a significant headache on return.

Walk around the car before leaving the lot. Check for existing scratches, dents, chips in the windshield, and any damage on the bumpers. Make sure anything you find is noted on the rental agreement — or photographed with a timestamp if the agent isn’t marking it down. Do the same on the inside: note any stains, damage to seats, or issues with the dashboard.

Return the car in the same condition you received it, with the fuel level matching what was agreed at pickup. Returning on empty when you picked up on full is one of the most common and avoidable extra charges first-time renters encounter.

One Last Thing Before You Book

The best time to sort out any questions is before you hand over your card — not at the counter with a line behind you. A quick call or message to confirm the pickup process, what’s included in the rate, and whether your intended routes require winter tires will make the whole experience smoother.

Ready to Book Your Vehicle?

Need something affordable for a quick trip? A premium vehicle for a special occasion? A reliable SUV for the whole family? Whatever it is, the process should be straightforward — and that’s the goal here.

Vancouver has plenty of rental options, which can make picking one feel harder than it should. The easiest way to narrow it down is to start with what your trip actually needs — vehicle size, how long you’ll need it, and any specific pickup or drop-off requirements. From there, compare a couple of options based on total cost, not just the headline rate, and the right choice usually becomes obvious.

Still not sure which category fits? That’s a completely normal place to be. Browse what’s available, see what falls into each category, and reach out with questions — you don’t need everything figured out before getting in touch.
